College and Career Advisement

A September 2019 brief published by the American Institutes for Research â€‹provides three insights about the state of academic and postsecondary advisement in high schools:

  1. Counseling could increase students' understanding of postsecondary options and boost social capital that allows students to leverage advice.
  2. Effective advisement involves building trust and rapport with students, providing information and tools, and encouraging students to manage their postsecondary plans.
  3. The empirical evidence base for implementing advisement programs is lacking. The authors suggest that the evidence level for these initiatives is "promising."
